Marie Anne Gill (Walther), age 86, of Custer, transitioned peacefully at home, on May 19, 2025, embraced by love and care, embodying a spirit of happiness and freedom in her final days.
Marie was born January 11, 1939, in Oconomowoc, WI; daughter of the late Everett and Hazel Wilhimena (Hendricksen) Walther. She grew up in the area with her beloved siblings, Janet, Pat, Jerry, and Penny. Marie shared countless stories of her adventures throughout Wisconsin, each filled with the spirit of exploration. Her best memories revolved around her grandparents, highlighting how her family's resilience and unity thrived through both challenges and triumphs.
Marie went on to further her education by attending UW-Stevens Point. Some of her favorite memories were from her time as a student there. She used her education to impact the education and lives of others, becoming a teacher herself. When she met Robert J. Gill, she fell in love and was thrilled to become Mrs. Gill. She cherished her time traveling across the world with Robert, who was in the Air Force. Some of her favorite places they spent time at included Texas, Louisiana, Alaska, and Colorado. However, Alaska held her most special memories and was always a place she wanted to return to.
Marie had a zest for life and genuinely enjoyed nearly every hobby one could think of. If she saw something that piqued her interest, she would delve into it and prove she could do it. Then, she would be on to another! Marie knew how to make the most of life and was sure to enjoy every minute.
Marie is lovingly survived by her children, Robert J. Gill, Matthew C. Gill, Janet M. Gill and Andrew J. Gill; her grandchildren, Mateo C. Gill and Holland DeKock; and her sisters, Pat Grzybowski and Penny Walther.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Gill Sr.; her brother, Jerry Walther; her sister, Janet Walther; and her parents, Everett and Hazel.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to all the friends she met along the way, from Alaska to Colorado to Wisconsin, for the loving support she received, from the Kaemers, Schmitts, Gills, Gibsons to the Cases and the Walther's families, and her forever childhood friend, Sue, and to the caregivers who made her final days comfortable and enjoyable.
A funeral service will be held for Marie at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception (7176 Esker Road, Custer, WI).
