Marlin was born on August 10, 1939, south of Williamson, Iowa, to Kenneth and Marlene (Ashby) White. He began his education in Williamson through the 7th grade, and later graduated from Chariton High School in 1957. He was active in 4-H and FFA during his youth, developing a lifelong love of farming. From a young age, Marlin raised sheep and livestock-interests that would shape his life's work.
A love story began when a determined young woman pursued Marlin for two years before their first date on the 4th of July. That woman, Linda Carmody, became his wife on May 10, 1958. Together, they shared more than 67 years of love, laughter, and life on the farm.
Marlin and Linda raised their three sons on the family farm, where they taught the values of hard work, humility, and kindness. Marlin passed on his knowledge of agriculture by working side-by-side with his family, raising crops and livestock including hogs, chickens, and cattle.
Beyond the farm, Marlin gave generously of his time and talents. He served on several boards, including the Co-op, Production Credit Association, and Grinnell Mutual Insurance. He remained involved in 4-H throughout his life, first as a youth and later as a mentor to his sons. Marlin was known for offering guidance while encouraging independence, a legacy seen in the success of his children and grandchildren.
A skilled mechanic by necessity, Marlin took pride in repairing farm machinery, often making it a family affair. He and Linda turned parts runs into day trips-enjoying the journey, the scenery, and the people they met along the way.
Marlin and Linda loved their time at the Iowa State Fair, working together in the Food Building and camping for over 50 years. These days became cherished traditions filled with friendship and fun.
Family was the cornerstone of Marlin's life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The White family home was always open for gatherings-whether it was for meetings, lively discussions, or joyful celebrations around the kitchen table. Family vacations and annual picnics on the farm were treasured events that brought everyone together.
Marlin passed away on June 30, 2025. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Linda; their children: Mark (Rhonda) White, Tim (Peggy) White, and Kevin (Becky) White; grandchildren: Brian (Sheena) White, Andrea White, Brett (Ashly) White, Tori (Travis) White, Brenden (Alaina) Eilander, Shaun (Rem) Eilander, Brittany White, and Ty (Lindsey) White; and great-grandchildren: Brandt, Norah, and Wren. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
Marlin was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Marlene White, and his sister, Linda (Bob) Halden.
His legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the love he gave so freely. He will be remembered always.
