Mary Jane Caldwell (Angelakos), 95, of Bedminster, N.J, died peacefully at Somerset Medical Center, on Friday, May 2, 2025, with her devoted aides and dearest friend's niece by her side.
Blessed with a smile that lit up the room, an infectious laugh, and a tremendous capacity to love, Mary was a "people person". She was an excellent skier and loved to play tennis and golf. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, and friend, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Born in
Somerville, NJ, on March 18, 1930, Mrs. Caldwell was the daughter of Louise Hero and John Angelakos. She was predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Dr. Carlyle "Corky" Caldwell, Chairman of the Board and CEO of National Starch and Chemical Company; her sister Pauline Angelakos; and her brother M. John Angelakos. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Rose Ann Angelakos; her stepson Geoffrey Caldwell; many cousins in the Angelakos and Hero families; her aides Adelia, Aleida, Keti, Mara, Nona, Rafy, Rosemary, and Tina; extended family and friends; and dear friend Fred Winters. They loved her, and she loved them. Mary held a close relationship with her young cousins and was godmother to Michael Angelakos, musician and performer from the international group 'Passion Pit.'
As a youngster, Mary worked many hours in the family business, Candy Kitchen, located on Main Street, Somerville, N.J. She was a graduate of Somerville High School and had a fulfilling career at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, where she retired as Payroll Department Administrator. She loved Rutgers, and, for decades, she could be found playing golf at the Rutgers University Golf Course on a weekly basis.
Mary was a lifelong and devoted member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, participating in worship services and many ministries. She cherished her Greek heritage and often visited extended family in Greece.
She and her husband Corky were active members of the Raritan Valley Country Club, the Manasquan River Golf Club, and the Spring Lake Bath & Tennis Club. They enjoyed winters in Florida, and summers at their Jersey Shore home in Sea Girt, NJ.
She and Corky also were blessed by sharing their retirement with a small group of dear friends where the laughter never ceased, and now continues on the other side of the veil. In her later years, Mary's aides were devoted to her, and she was devoted to them. She proudly taught them "Greek" cooking, which she considered "the best food in the world."
Funeral services will be held 11am Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1101 River Road, Piscataway. Interment will follow at New Cemetery in Somerville. Visitation will be 3-5pm Monday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave, Somerville.
