Mary Campbell Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 15, 2025.
Mary Campbell, lovingly known as "DD" to many, passed away on June 18, 2025. She was born on May 30, 1952, in Hinsdale, Illinois. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Scott Campbell Sr., her sisters Allyn Cornell (née Campbell), Suzanne Campbell, and her beloved brother Scott "Scotty" Campbell Jr. Mary lived a life defined by strength, compassion, and unwavering love. To her four adopted children-Cameron, Catherine, Candelaria, and James Carlos-she was more than a mother; she was their guiding light, their fiercest protector, and their greatest champion. Raising them on her own, Mary poured her heart into nurturing their growth, instilling in them values that would shape their lives: self-reliance, integrity, honesty, curiosity, courage, and kindness to all living beings. Mary had a deep and abiding love for animals. She rescued and cared for countless cats and dogs, and was a devoted supporter of animal welfare, especially through the nonprofit Magnificent Mutts. Her home was always open to those in need-whether they had two legs or four. A lifelong, dedicated educator, Mary taught ESL and Spanish at William F. Gurrie Middle School in La Grange, IL for over 25 years, where she inspired generations of students with her humor, patience, and passion for language. She graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in 1970 and earned her Master's degree from the University of Illinois. A Celebration of Life will be held as soon as a suitable location can be reserved. Details will be shared as they become available. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to: • Magnificent Mutts – 755 N. Wolf Road, Hillside, IL 60162 • The Gorilla Foundation – PO Box 620530, Woodside, CA 94062
• The Jane Goodall Institute - 1120 20th St. NW #520s, Washington, DC 20036
Mary's legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the animals she saved, and the love she gave so freely.
