Mary Lela Crenshaw Hough of Charleston, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025.
Mary was born on February 9, 1927, in Charleston, Missouri, to the late Joseph Moore Crenshaw and Henry Lela Finley Crenshaw. On December 5, 1943, she married Carl Harrison Hough, who proceeded her in death, March 1, 1978.
Mary and Carl had four children. Mary Carla (Jack) Coleman, Vivian Lee (Virgil) Downing, Henry "Hank" Harrison (Jane) Hough, Linda Sue Hough Oliver
She was the Cherished "Mayme" to Eleven Grandchildren. Lee (Pete) Madsen, Mary Dean (James) Kelly, David (Jessica) Downing, Natalie (Shannon) Lynch, Dr. Brad (Joy) Hough, Dr. Greg (Remy) Hough, Brian (Laura) Hough, Matthew (Jenny) Hough, Madeline (John Bob) Wilson, Emily (Michael) Allred, Summer (Brian) Cox. Mary also leaves behind her precious great-Grandchildren.
She lived in Charleston all of her life and was a devoted Christian and member of the United Methodist Church of Charleston.
Mary had many self-taught talents, but her specialty was her ability to hand sew anything with great detail and was usually extremely tedious. This included, needlepoint, smocking and embroidery. She was able to sew just about anything and all that she sewed was a one-of-a-kind piece of art. She handmade the most beautiful, detailed children's smocked dresses that we all treasured. Her quilts were a masterpiece. The perfection of her hand sewn quilts was amazing, where no detail was ever left behind. always a showstopper. She was a part of a quilters group in Paducah, KY where she made many quilts together with her KY friends.
Mary had a green thumb. Even though she would never admit it she could make any plant grow beautifully. Her love for flowers was strong and her love for a beautiful, manicured yard was stronger. Throughout her life, Mary earned numerous Yard of the Month awards. She was most proud when she would receive this award during the Month of the annual Dogwood Azalea Festival.
In addition to loving her family, Mary loved being with her LOL's. She was the oldest and the last one to pass away of the Famed LOL group. We know that her place at the coffee table is already set, and she is now drinking coffee together around a large round table sharing stories. I can only imagine the Warm Welcome she received. It can only make you smile.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by beloved son in law, David Oliver, and her brothers, Henry (Virginia) Crenshaw and Bridwell (Maxine) Crenshaw.
Family and friends may assemble for graveside services at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston. Rev. Scott Moon, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston and Rev. Beth Allen, pastor of the Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church in East Prairie, will officiate.
Interment will follow under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, plants and gift items, the family kindly requests memorials be made to the Mississippi County Library District, 105 East Marshall Street, Charleston, MO 63834
