Mary Kathryn (Kay) Davenport Humphries of Leander, Texas, a passionate and generous spirit, left this world on Feb 26, 2025, after a life filled with kindness, and a deep love for family, animals and her community. Born March 3, 1947, in Americus GA, she was the highly outspoken second of four children to Lewis and Ruth (Hartley) Davenport. She died of a heart attack after an extended illness.
She was proud of her Southern roots and South Georgia heritage. Kay graduated from the University of Georgia with a double degree in Political Science and International Affairs, where she met her beloved future husband, David. After graduation, she began her "dream job", working for the Wage & Hour Division for the U.S. Department of Labor in Ft. Lauderdale. Among her proudest accomplishments, was her work enforcing equal pay standards --particularly for women-- under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Although somewhat afraid of heights, she courageously took up skydiving; mind you, this was the early 1970s, prior to tandem skydiving. Never one to back down from a debate, she lived a life of courage and conviction. She was especially passionate about animal welfare, the plight of the children of the Indian Schools, a champion of "the underdog", country music, and most of all, her family. Kay had a sharp mind and had an avid interest in politics, especially pertaining to protecting the rights of the most vulnerable people in our society. More than once, she described herself as "Righteously indignant, and damn proud of it!"
She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, David, her only daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Marc Conselman and her siblings, Sarah Rondeau, Walter Davenport, and Gail Davenport and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her legacy and light will continue to shine through her highly precocious and utterly adored granddaughters, Amelia Kate and Reese Conselman, for whom she could not have been more proud.
A celebration of her life service will be held Saturday, March 8th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Concord Methodist Church in Americus, Georgia, with interment immediately following in Concord Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation with the family will take place at the church from 10:00 a.m to service time.
