Mary Lou Karahuta (Stegner), 79, formerly of Southport, North Carolina, died on Friday, May 9,
in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Mary Lou, an only child, was born in June 1945 to Clifford and
Arletta Stegner in Malverne, New York. In 1967 she earned a bachelor of science degree in
elementary education from New York College at Cortland (State University of New York) and
spent over 30 years teaching primary grades in Canton, Oberlin and Sheffield Lake, Ohio.
Mary Lou's husband of 43 years, John David Karahuta, preceded her in death in March 2024. They
resided in Avon Lake and Vermilion, Ohio, prior to retiring in Southport, North Carolina. They
enjoyed sailing and travel with friends and were longtime contributing members of the Vermilion
Boat Club.
Memories of her quick wit, sense of humor and infectious laugh will be treasured by
friends and family. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, entertaining and sharing her homes with
countless friends.
Mary Lou is survived by cousins Marilyn Stegner, Donald Stegner and Rosemary Zezukinski; sister-in-law
Pat Geyer; and nephews Scott and Kevin Geyer.
Mary Lou loved dogs and enjoyed caring for many. Memorials may be made to Southport Oak Island
Animal Rescue, 3376 St. Charles Place SE, Southport, NC 28461.
