Mary T. Nichols, 72, of Ellington, formerly of East Hartford and Glastonbury, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. She was born on March 5, 1953, in Hartford, oldest of six children to the late John and Marion Turley.
Mary grew up in East Hartford and was a graduate of the former George J. Penney High School, Class of 1971. Mary enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1971 and proudly served her country during the Vietnam War. She was honorably discharged in 1976 having earned the rank of Sergeant.
Mary was employed with JC Penny, in Manchester, for over 20 years before her retirement in 2014. Faith was very important to her. She was a longtime parishioner of the Church of St. Luke in Ellington. Mary had a true love for plants and flowers, finding joy in tending to her garden and bringing beauty to every space. Her green thumb and gentle care reflected her warmth, patience, and love for life's simple pleasures. In her spare time she enjoyed spending time soaking up the sun at the beach. She also looked forward to time she was able to spend in the kitchen baking delicious treats with her grandchildren. Although our time with Mary has come to an end, her memory will be cherished in the hearts of her family and friends for years to come.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Erin Troup and her husband Bub of Kathleen, GA; her son, Bobby Nichols III, and his wife Allison of Coventry; her five grandchildren, Charissa Hathaway and her husband Kyle, Haley Troup and her fiancé Robert, Tyler Troup, Savannah Nichols, and Autumn Nichols; her four cherished great-grandchildren, Everett, Ashton, Madelyn, and Hudson; her five siblings, Kathleen Regan of Suffield, Patricia Edgar of Hebron, Brian Turley and his wife Karen of Broad Brook, Kevin Turley and his wife Dylia of Manchester, and Noreen Turley of East Hartford; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rt. 83) in Vernon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 15, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Luke, 141 Maple St., Ellington. Guests are asked to please go directly to the church. At the request of her family, burial will be held privately in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.
