Maxine Thornton Ammons, 73, of Bossier City, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Born June 22, 1952, in Savannah, Georgia, Maxine lived life with creativity, kindness, and just the right amount of sass.
She retired from Things Remembered in Pierre Bossier Mall—but "retired" is a strong word for someone who couldn’t sit still. Maxine continued working at Kroger on Airline Drive, where she greeted everyone like an old friend and could spot a good deal a mile away.
Maxine was a queen of yard sales, a thrift store ninja, and a collector of thimbles, owls, and all things miniature. She was known to slam on the brakes for a rummage sale sign—much to the horror of any passenger. She made jewelry for friends and family, played Pokeno with her beloved group of ladies, and somehow always had just the right trinket for every occasion.
She was a proud supporter of Shriners Children’s Hospital in Shreveport—honoring her father’s legacy as a Shriner and supporting two of her granddaughters who received care there. She loved big, laughed often, and talked to everyone. Maxine had a knack for making strangers feel like family and family feel like royalty.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Ammons; father, Boyd Thornton; mother, Geri Damrow; brother, Carl Thornton; sister, Valarie Potvin; mother-in-law, Elsie Heckart; and great-granddaughter, Addison Vining.
Maxine is survived by her children, Angela (Thomas) Smith, Christina (Cecil) Allen, Joshua (Becky) King, Tammi Bunting, and Brandi Bunting; her sister, Camille (Bob) Watson; her brother, Jeffery Thornton; brother-in-law, Dana Potvin; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends who adored her.
Honoring Maxine as pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Cassandra Smith, Reilly Smith, Thomas Smith, and Taylor Smith. Serving as an honorary pallbearer will be her beloved son, Joshua King.
A service to celebrate her wonderful life will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM, with the service at 11:00 AM, followed by a burial at Rose-Neath Cemetery, located on Swan Lake Road. Officiating the service will be Reverend Johnny Flenory.
In place of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Shreveport, www.shrinerschildrens.org, because Maxine believed in helping kids and never met a cause she wouldn’t support with her whole heart.
