RICHARD MAHAN Obituary

MAHAN, Richard F. Jr. May 13, 1948 - November 19, 2024 Rick died unexpectedly at home, on November 19, 2024. He lived in Swampscott for many years and prior to that lived in Lynnfield and Peabody. He attended St. John's Prep, graduated from Lynnfield High School and went on to George Washington University in D.C.. He worked as a bartender at the General Glover House and a sommelier at Anthony's Pier Four in Boston. He ran several miles a few times a week and since moving to Swampscott about 20 years ago, swam in the Atlantic almost every day, year-round. He held subscription tickets to the Metropolitan Opera in New York and would drive to NYC regularly with his niece, Ashley, to attend every opera of the season. He was also an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, though he was an outspoken critic of many of the rule changes in all professional sports, beginning with the Designated Hitter. Rick was a voracious reader particularly of history. Anyone who spent more than 5 minutes talking to Rick walked away knowing he was one of the smartest people he or she had ever met. Though mostly very soft-spoken, he could speak authoritatively on a wide variety of subjects and was always interested in what other people could add to his knowledge. His hearty laugh was a pleasure to everyone who heard it. He leaves behind his sister, Kathy Randele; and niece, Ashley Randele of Wakefield; as well as the many cousins who will miss him greatly. Anthony Athanas, Michael Athanas, Paul Athanas, Loraine Peters, Lewis Athanas, Peter Athanas, Jay Rooney, Jeanne Hennessey, Tim Rooney, Michael Watson, Richard Guiliani, Ginny Davis, Joan Richard, Cindy Giuliani and Matthew Giuliani. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Mahan and Dorothy Mahan Melchionda; his stepfather, John Melchionda; his brother-in-law, Tom Randele; and cousins, Robert Athanas, Mary Ann Athanas, Juliet Southwick, Jean Zengo and Loretta Kelley. Visitation at the funeral home 10:30-11 am. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11 am, at Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street, LYNN, MA 01902.
