Michael James Costello, 64, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, in Galveston, Texas. Born on August 29, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Michael was a man of intellect and boundless creativity.
He graduated Cum Laude from Alief Hastings High School and pursued higher education at Sam Houston State University and the University of Houston, driven by a lifelong thirst for knowledge.
Michael's professional journey was rooted primarily in accounting. Over the years, he held positions with the Houston Gamblers, Prudential Life Insurance, a jewelry store in Galveston, and co-owned Milltello Designs. He concluded his career with his retirement from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
As the son of an Air Force officer, Michael's childhood was shaped by travel and cultural exploration, including Little Rock, Arkansas; Lincoln, Nebraska; Mountain Home, Idaho; Biloxi, Mississippi; Tokyo, Japan; Rome, New York and Alief, Texas.
Michael's talents and interests were many. In high school, he served as piano accompanist for choir and UIL competitions and was active in the drama club, where he performed in numerous plays. He was an animal lover from an early age, having cared for a variety of pets, and was especially devoted to his beloved dog, Anna.
A gifted artist and craftsman, Michael explored stained glass, gardening, crochet, and cooking. More recently, he had taken up playing the clarinet and accordion-always eager to learn and try something new.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his surviving spouse and partner of 34 years, Bill Milligan. Their bond was one of deep devotion and enduring respect. Michael is also survived by his sister Kathy Edworthy and her husband Charles of Katy, Texas; niece Rachel Hopkins and husband Patrick of Missouri City, Texas; nephew Barrett Edworthy and wife Abigail of La Feria, Texas.
Michael will be deeply missed by his friends and family, who will forever hold dear the warmth, laughter, and joy he brought into their lives.
Funeral service will be held on July 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Galveston Trinity Episcopal Church, with a reception to follow. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Galveston, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Galveston Humane Society in memory of Michael J. Costello.
