Michael "Mike" Janopoulos, a distinguished educator and devoted traveler, was born on March 2, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Grundy Center, Iowa. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Mike's academic journey was marked by dedication and achievement. He graduated from West Leyden High School in 1968 in North Lake, Illinois, laying the foundation for a life devoted to education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. His educational qualifications reflected not only his commitment to personal growth but also his passion for imparting knowledge.
Mike's teaching career spanned several decades and varied locations. From 1972 to 1973, he inspired high school students in Geneva, Illinois, before continuing in Keokuk, Iowa, from 1973 to 1974. His journey took him overseas to Cairo, Egypt, where he taught from 1976 to 1980, and subsequently to Saudi Arabia from 1980 to 1984. Mike returned to the United States and resumed his teaching contributions at Southeast Missouri State from 1987 to 1989. His remarkable career culminated at the University of Northern Iowa, where he taught from 1989 until his retirement in 2012. Even after retirement, Mike remained interconnected with education by substitute teaching for Cedar Valley Schools, demonstrating his enduring passion for teaching and community engagement.
In addition to his career, Mike was an avid reader and a sci-fi enthusiast who found joy in exploring new worlds through literature. His love for travel took him to many places, enriching his understanding of cultures around the globe. Those who knew him appreciated his kind-hearted nature, as well as his ability to listen and connect with others deeply. His laid-back demeanor made him approachable, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand without a hint of complaint.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, kindness, and an adventurous spirit that will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His life was a testament to passion, curiosity, and unwavering support of others, making a profound impact on both his students and peers.
Mike is survived by his wife Dawn, three step children; Abbey Hatton, Adam Thomas, Annie Thomas, one son; Gregory (Gerwin) Janopoulos, one sister; Camille (Bill) Johnston, two nieces; Amy, Joelle (Eric), one nephew; Clay and six grandchildren; Ethan, Kamren, Carter, Kace, Falyn, Holyn and William. He is preceded in death by his parents Peter and Aline (Hall) Janopoulos, and a brother Alex.
