Michael G. McCormick, 77 years, a lifelong resident of Monroe, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Born November 30, 1947 in Monroe, Mike was the son of the late Edward J. and Margaret C. (Grant) McCormick. Mike was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Monroe, where he was baptized, confirmed, and attended elementary school. He was a 1965 graduate of Monroe Catholic Central High School, where he played basketball. Mike went on to receive his bachelor's degree in business from Michigan State University and a master's degree in business and finance from Eastern Michigan University.
On October 25, 1974, at St. John the Baptist Parish, Mike married the love of his life, Gail Chesney.
Mike began his career in banking at First National Bank in Monroe. In 1992 Mike went to work at Monroe Bank and Trust. He retired from the bank as the vice president of the trust department in 2006. After retirement, Mike worked as a substitute teacher for several years. He also coached boys basketball at St. John's and Jefferson, and girls basketball at SMCC for 25 years.
Mike was a lifetime member of Monroe Boat Club, a member of Green Meadows Golf Club and a former member of the Monroe Exchange and Monroe Club. Being civic minded and feeling a need to give back to his community, Mike served on the board at the YMCA, River Raisin Center for the Arts, and the Community Foundation of Monroe. He spent many years playing recreational basketball and softball and had a lifelong passion for boating and traveling. He loved playing euchre on Sunday's at the Monroe Boat Club and spending time with family at Sand Point. At the age of 74, Mike decided to start golfing and even got a hole in one during his first year of playing. As an avid and VERY emotional Michigan State Fan he enjoyed watching them play football and basketball.
Mike leaves his memory to be cherished by his loving wife of 50 years, Gail, three sisters: Pam LaBeau of Monroe, Mickey (Jim) Davies of Grand Rapids, and Katie (Steve) Bolhuis of Muskegon, a sister-in-law, Pat McCormick of Monroe, and a brother-in-law, Greg (Cindy) Chesney of Monroe. Additionally, he leaves behind, 2 uncles, 14 nieces and nephews, 35 great nieces and nephews and his furry friend Izzo.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brother, E.J. McCormick, Jr., his nephew, E.J. McCormick, III and his brother-in-law, Ron LaBeau.
In keeping with Mike's wishes cremation will be held.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13th from 3 – 7 pm at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, Michigan, 48161, where a memorial service officiated by Deacon Mike Stewart to celebrate Mike's life will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to, the soon to be established, Michael and Gail McCormick Scholarship Fund at SMCC.
