Michael Reres was born in Bayonne, NJ but knew Staten Island as his home, living in New Dorp, Westerleigh, and Eltingville. In 2002 he moved to his home in Matawan, NJ. While he lived in Old Bridge, NJ for a time, he called Staten Island his home until making a permanent move to New Jersey. Michael, affectionately known as Mike, worked in the Post Office on Manor Road for more than 30 years, retiring as an MPE Mechanic in 2004. Mike attended training in Norman, Oklahoma for the Post Office, completed EMT training and then attended night school at St. Vincent's in Manhattan to become a paramedic. He graduated in 1991. He worked for Richmond County Ambulance performing advanced life support transports of patients to Manhattan for heart surgeries before these services were available on Staten Island. He volunteered for various ambulance squads in Staten Island and New Jersey. He also worked as a paramedic at Woodstock'94. He met his wife, Liz, through the volunteer ambulance squad and, after their first date, they saw or spoke to each other every day for over 35 years. Michael was a disabled Veteran who served in the Army during the Vietnam era. Mike was a member of the South Amboy American Legion Post 62 and DAV Chapter 74 in Freehold, NJ. He enjoyed participating in parades and various events throughout the year. He was very much interested in the well being of fellow veterans. Michael had a passion for classic cars. He enjoyed car shows and made many friends through these events over the years. He owned a 1967 Pontiac GTO and a 1988 Camaro convertible. He also enjoyed working on his cars and was a member of the Legendary Muscle Cars Auto Club. Michael was the son of the late Earnest Reres and Helen (Reed). He is survived by his beloved wife of over 30 years, Elizabeth (Peterson). He was a loving father of Raymond (Geraldine) and Michelle; cherished grandfather of Lauren, Andrew, and Ava; loving brother of Joseph Reres and the late Annette Martin. Through marriage, he gained many brothers and sisters, Charles (Betty) Peterson, Margaret (Michael) Grace, Edward (Susan) Peterson, James (Deanna) Peterson, as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly. He was also the best Dog Dad to his three beagles: Milo, Benny and Luke. Michael loved his family and friends and would do anything for them. He was always there to offer a ride to a doctor's appointment, airport run, or help to build or fix something. If you called, Mike answered. He was loved and will be missed. Donations in Mike's memory can be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or Wounded Warrior Project in lieu of flowers. A Funeral service will be held at 10:15 AM on Saturday at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service located at 3377 US Highway 9 Old Bridge, New Jersey 08857. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey.
