SCOTLAND NECK, NC - Micky Eugene Sorie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, at the age of 90. Born on September 21, 1934, in Enfield, North Carolina, Micky's life was a testament to faith, family, and a love for the great outdoors.
Micky's journey began in Enfield, where he spent his early years before moving to Scotland Neck at the age of 15. It was there that he met Edna, his high school sweetheart, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of nearly 69 years. They wed on July 29, 1956, and together built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
After graduating from Scotland Neck High School in 1954, Micky proudly served his country in the United States Army. His service took him to the majestic Mt. Fuji in Japan, an experience that shaped his character and outlook on life. Upon returning home, he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from East Carolina University (formerly East Carolina Teachers College).
Micky's career as a manager with the North Carolina Department of Revenue was marked by dedication and integrity, yet it was his passions outside of work that truly defined him. While Micky enjoyed fishing and being outdoors, hunting was his all-time favorite pastime. An avid hunter, Micky found solace and joy in the quiet moments spent bird hunting, often accompanied by his loyal dogs. He raised and trained bird dogs, including Brittany Spaniels and Setters, sharing a deep bond with his canine companions. Micky had several "good" hunting dogs, but he always said you only have one "best" hunting dog, and his was his faithful Brittany Spaniel named Sassy. His son, Gene, often accompanied him and remembers well many of their adventures, saying that his dad was not just a good hunter but was hands down the best shot he has ever known. Micky's favorite saying after a long day of hunting was, "It's getting tired outside," a reflection of his enduring spirit and zest for life. His love for the outdoors was surpassed only by his love for his family.
His firm handshake and warm smile were his trademarks, and he never met a stranger. Micky's love for people was evident in every conversation, and he left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck, Micky served as Secretary/Treasurer of his Sunday School class, a Deacon, and on several church boards. His commitment to his faith and community was unwavering, and he found great joy in fellowship with his church family.
Micky is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Rue Sorie and Laura Newsome Sorie; his sister, Bonnie Sorie Debardeleben, and brother-in-law, Earnest Debardeleben; and his faithful canine companion, Sassy.
