Mildred Electa McLaughlin Remek passed away peacefully in Miramar, Florida on September 10, 2024. She was born on a family farm near Lavery, PA on February 3, 1926, the daughter of the late Andrew and Flora McLaughlin. She lived on the farm until 1988 when she moved to another family farm near Crossingville, PA.
A 1943 graduate of Albion High School, Mildred went on to study education at Edinboro Normal School and began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse with all eight grades in Elk Creek Township in 1945. She subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Edinboro State Teachers College in 1948, and completed her master’s degree in elementary reading education from Edinboro State College in 1963. She taught for 55 years in Elk Creek and then Northwestern Elementary School in Albion, PA.
Mildred was an active member of St. Philip Catholic Church, where she tended the gardens on the parish grounds and played organ in her retirement. She was an avid gardener and also enjoyed travel and outings with her retired teacher friends. She has resided in assisted living facilities in South Florida since 2019.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony, and son, Philip. She is survived by her son, Robert (Mary Jo) of Cooper City, FL.
Friends may call Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Philip Catholic Church, 25797 Rte. 98, Edinboro, PA on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 11 a.m.
