Mildred was born on June 13, 1929, to Ellsworth W. and Winifred (Houtz) Stevenson. She grew up on the family farm in the Dennison community northwest of Albion. She began her education at Dennison District 24 and later moved with her family to rural Cedar Rapids and then to the District 44 community west of Albion. Mildred graduated from Albion High School with the class of 1947.
Following high school, Mildred served in the homes of area families before becoming a nurse's aide at the Boone County Hospital in 1951. After the passing of her mother later that year, she left her job to care for her younger siblings, becoming the legal guardian of her youngest brother, Robert, at just 22 years old. Her deep sense of duty and compassion guided her caregiving for the next decade. In 1957, Mildred returned to hospital work, a calling that reflected her nurturing spirit. On September 13, 1959, she married LeRoy J. Fritzen, and together on the family farm, they raised five children: Warren, Sharron, Laurie, Duane, and Joan. Once her children were grown, Mildred returned to work, this time at the Wolf Home, where she lovingly served the community for 15 more years until her retirement in 2003.
Even in retirement, Mildred remained active and generous. She found joy in tending her flowers, vegetable garden, and enjoyed preserving her produce for the future. In the colder months, she poured her love into quilting for her grandchildren-each stitch a reflection of her devotion and care.
Mildred was a lifelong, faithful member of the Albion Church of Christ, having been baptized on June 25, 1944. Her life was a living testimony to the virtues described in Proverbs 31: a woman of noble character, who worked diligently, loved deeply, and served faithfully. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and her quiet strength blessed all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, LeRoy (2006), her dear son Warren (2006), her parents, and her brothers Weldon and Elwin Stevenson, sister Marian Brickel, and sisters-in-law Thelma and Bonnie Stevenson.
Mildred is survived by her brothers; Leonard (Norma) Stevenson of Ozark, MO; Robert (Nancy) Stevenson of Alcoa, TN; brother-in-law; Harlan Brickel of
Albion, NE; children; Sharron (John) Morrill of Overland Park, KS; Laurie (Mike) Olson of Loveland, CO; Duane Fritzen of
Albion, NE; and Joan (Dave) Steffens of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law; Jennifer (Eric) Iler; her eleven cherished grandchildren: Stephen Morrill, Laura (Justus) Zabel, Sarah Morrill, Keenan (Kayla) Shotts, Haleigh (Jordan) Heisler, Dena (Alex) Salomon, Meg Markley, Dakota, Dylan, Britton, and Amanda Fritzen; her treasured great-grandchildren Wyatt and Max Salomon and many nieces and nephews.
Mildred's legacy is one of love, quiet strength, faithfulness, and a heart devoted to family and community. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
