Mildred Inez Gentry Lindsay Stewart passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2025, with her husband and youngest daughter by her side. Millie was born in Cumberland County on January 17, 1934, to Glen and Verna (Kingery) Gentry. She was the 8th of 12 children.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday May 10, 2025, at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup. There will be a one-hour visitation held prior to the service. Burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery in rural Greenup. Meal provided at Jewett Christian Church, following
Millie started singing at the age of 8. A member of the original Cumberland County Barn Dance, she had to stand on a chair to reach the microphone. Later in life she had her own band, Millie Lee and The Leeways and was thrilled to open shows for several Nashville artists such as Buck Owens, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Hank Williams Jr., to name a few. She was still singing with a band a week or two ago. While managing her band, Millie also worked in the Art Department at E.W. Petty Printing Company, for many years.
Millie enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, making jelly and apple butter and quilting-- of which she made several for her children and grandchildren. She had a contagious laugh, quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor.
Millie had three children. Loren Lindsay preceded in death, Stacey (Mike) Nichols, Teddi Lindsay-Tabacek (Mike), stepchildren Leslie Lindsay, Allison Lindsay-Sullivan, Angel Carter and Rusty Stewart preceded in death. She had 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She married the love of her life, James L. Stewart in 2011.
She leaves behind a brother, Virgil Gentry and a sister, Linda Schrock. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Loren, brothers Ralph, Carl, Donald, Bob, Paul, Dale and sisters Dorothy Hannah, Alene Gutmann and Shirley Cisney
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Jewett Community Church, Plum Grove Church, or to the Oblong Children's Christian Home: 4094 E. 1050th Ave. Oblong IL. 62449.
