Nathan Grigsby Sawyer, age 90, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at The Rutherford Assisted Living. He was a native of Franklin. He and his wife, Anita, were married for 66 years. He was the son of the late Nathan Gill Sawyer and the late Elise Grisgby Sawyer. He was a veteran serving in the U. S. Army. He spent his career with over 40 years in the Education field. He was a teacher at the former Hillsboro School, Franklin High School, and Ensworth School (Red Gables campus). His 37-year career at Ensworth included teaching History, Geography, Business manager, and coaching numerous teams, including football, girls' basketball, soccer, and cross country. He served as headmaster his final year. He was an avid reader and enjoyed old movies. He and Anita thoroughly enjoyed traveling in their RV and had traveled to all 48 contiguous states along with Canada, Africa and Europe. He most of all cherished the time spent with his wife, family, and grandchildren. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Anita West Sawyer, and his sister, Katherine Oden.
He is survived by his sons, Timothy (Denise) Sawyer and Scott (Mignonne) Sawyer; daughter, Katrena (Jeanne Dorman) Ruttenbur; brother-in-law, Lt. Col. Robert West, II; grandchildren, Travis (Heather) Hastings, Abigail (Brendan) Fuge, Nathan Ruttenbur, Sabrina Ruttenbur, Clayton (Rebecca) Sawyer, Cameron (Elizabeth) Sawyer; great grandchild, Jackson Hastings; nieces, Becky (Jim) Hicks and Jody (Kent) Gordon; nephew, Trey (Rosa) West.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00.
Pallbearers will be Scott, Tim, Clay and Cameron Sawyer, Nathan Ruttenbur, Paul Hartbarger, Brendan Fuge, and Trey West. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Bridge Group and the Fuller Family.
