Nelson Freeman Sr., a husband, father, grandfather, and man of strength, was born September 18, 1954, in Ville Platte, Louisiana to Leaman Freeman Sr. and Sovelia Wilson Freeman. A resident of Lake Charles, he was a member of Riverside Baptist Church where he ministered for a season under the leadership of Pastor O'Neal King. Mr. Freeman worked as a longshoreman for the Lake Charles Stevedores and was widely respected for his craftmanship as a master carpenter. Known for his ability to complete turnkey projects, he had a special talent for laying ceramic tile, leaving his mark in many homes throughout the area. Outside of work, he found joy in the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He departed this life Monday, July 7, 2025, in Lake Charles surrounded by the love of his family. Mr. Freeman leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of fifty-one years, Dru Ann Slaughter Freeman; one daughter, La'Shanda Nicole Freeman; five sons, Nelson Freeman Jr., Marcus Lynn Freeman, Michael Tyrone (Michelle) Freeman Sr., Brandon Earl (Kimberley) Freeman, and Patrick (LaKoshia)) Freeman; two sisters, Ezola Freeman and Barbara (Darren) Toombs; three brothers, Irvin (Mary) Freeman, Donald (Barbara) Freeman, and Ronald Freeman; twenty grandchildren, I'Dalis, Nelson III, Catherine, Katherina, Timia, Faith, Me'Lissa, Marcus Jr., Marquis, Mariah, Michael Jr., Malcolm, Meila, Shandrika, Mia, Kailey, Jesslyn, Allison, Madison, and Paitlyn; one great grandchild, Nelson IV; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Freeman; parents; sister, Shirley Freeman; and brother, Leaman Freeman Jr. His visitation will be Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 10:30AM with his funeral following at 11:30AM, at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church located at 910 N. Shattuck Street in Lake Charles. Pastor Alvin Brass will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of James Funeral Home.
