Nicholas Ferrara of Ephrata, PA, passed away on June 22, 2025, at the age of 100, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on March 20, 1925, in Middletown, NY, Nick's century-long life was defined by courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones, his community, and his country.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Clementina "Claire" Ferrara; his son Nick; daughters Carma and Francine; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews who cherished him. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Brunetta Ferrara.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Nicholas served aboard the USS Princeton (CVL-23), an Independence-class aircraft carrier active in the Pacific during World War II. On October 24, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Princeton was struck by enemy fire and ultimately lost. Amid the chaos, Nicholas displayed extraordinary bravery-helping save the lives of two fellow shipmates and contributing to the ship's emergency response efforts. His actions earned him two commendation letters and the enduring respect of his fellow servicemen.
In his leisure time, he found joy in watching classic Westerns and cheering on his favorite sports teams-especially his beloved Dodgers, whose games he followed with lifelong devotion. He was a longtime member of St. Anne's Church in Fairlawn and a supporter of veterans' causes and children's charities.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Conte Funeral Home on June 29, with visitation hours from 1:00–3:00 p.m. and 5:00–7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on June 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne's Church in Fairlawn. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Totowa.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Nicholas's memory can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org, and to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org-two causes that reflect his lifelong values of service and strength.
