The memorial service for Norman W. Scott, 88, of
Aberdeen, SD, will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Jim Holthus officiating. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Norman died Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Norman was born on January 13, 1937, in Pontiac, Michigan. His parents were Norman Walter Scott and Mary Jane Barth Scott. A tragedy struck the family when Norman's mother was severely injured in a car accident and died from the injuries. Norman was only 9 months old, and his father knew he couldn't care for a baby, so he called Mary Jane's mother to see if she could care for her grandson. Grandmother Barth took a train to Pontiac and brought Norman to his new home in Aberdeen. Norman always thought Grandma was his mother. After a normal childhood, Norman took a paper route. In the spring the newspaper awarded a Schwinn bicycle the outstanding paperboy. Norman was that boy. He was so proud. His next job was as a caddy at the Aberdeen Country Club. He began playing golf and loved the game. He and Ted Zahn would get up really early so they could play before their caddying jobs. Later, they played in many tournaments and became very good at the sport. On one of their days off, Norman and Ted played 108 holes in golf in one day. At a dance at the local YMCA Norman asked a blonde girl to dance (Sheri Wudel), little knowing that six years later they would be married. Grandmother Barth died when Norman was 18. That's when he enlisted in the army and was shipped to Korea. He qualified for the Army Golf team and was able to travel around Korea to golf tournaments. When his tour was over, he returned to Aberdeen and resumed dating the blonde girl (Sheri Wudel). The wedding was in August of 1960. The couple were blessed with two sons, Stuart and Gregory. As toddlers, dad got them plastic golf clubs and gave them a start into the golf world. All three played in and won the 2011 Dave Haler Buick Open (three-man scramble). While attending Northern State University, Norman was medalist at the NAIA District 13 golf championship. Then, when Stuart was at Northern, he won the same tournament. Four years later, Greg won the same tournament. What a great family feat.
Norman was always proud of his boys. The family had a home built at Prairiewood Golf Course so that they could play every day. Besides his family, Norman loved his cats and dogs. His black Pomeranian, Sammy, was with him until he died.
Preceding Norman in death are Sheri's parents, Aunt Nora, and infant grandson Troy Scott. The heavenly choir has gained a good tenor.
Still surviving him are his wife and sons; grandchildren: Jillian, Rachel, Christopher, Sophie, Jesse, Steven, Abby, and Matt, and step-grandchildren Allison and Michael; and great grandchildren: Drake, Hailey, Bensen, Lucy, Naomi, Ryan, Joey and Nathan.
We love you dearly and will miss you so much.
