Sarah Bowen Smith, age 90, Tennille, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024 surrounded by her family. A graveside funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, December 18th at 11:00 a.m. in Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. Rev. Lamar Brantley will officiate. Her family will receive friends following the service at graveside. Pallbearers will be Doug Watkins, David Watkins, Jeremy Gay, Don Coe, Scott West, Brian Wiggins and Bryant Bowen.
Ms. Smith was a native of Washington County. She graduated from Tennille High School where she excelled in basketball. She began her career in textiles working for J.P. Stevens and retiring as a supervisor with Forstman Industries. She was not one to sit, so after she retired, she attended Sandersville Technical School. She loved making ceramics. Her childhood love of basketball continued throughout her life, and enjoyed watching basketball games on TV. Sarah was a bird enthusiast and possessed a special love for her dog Caesar. She is predeceased by her mother, Helen Boyd Armstrong and sisters, Peggy Bowen Sheppard and Mary Jane Bowen Crook.
Survivors include her son, Danny Watkins and his wife Shannon of Tennille; grandchildren, April Watkins Gay and her husband Jeremy of Blythe, Kristin Watkins Coe and her husband Don of Brooklet and Kaylee Watkins of Statesboro; her great granddaughter Sadie Gay; her brother, Donnie Bowen and his wife Sandra of Tennille and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to Washington County Empty Stocking Fund, P. O. Box 5713, Sandersville, GA 31082 or the Sandersville/Washington County Animal Shelter, P. O. Box 71, Sandersville, GA 31082.
The family will be at the home of Danny and Shannon Watkins, Hwy. 15 South, Tennille.
