Florence Corcoran Obituary

Florence Corcoran, 94, of Pierre passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at Avera St Mary's in Pierre, SD.
A visitation will be from 6-7pm on Thursday, October 16, 2025 with at prayer service at 7pm at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 17 at 10:00 am at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre.

Florence was born and raised in Hague, North Dakota, where she graduated from Hague High School. When her family relocated to Emery, South Dakota, Florence followed and soon enrolled in nursing school in Pierre, studying alongside her sister Jane. It was in Pierre that she met a fun-loving young man who would become the love of her life. While still in nursing school, Florence became engaged to Thomas Downey Corcoran Jr. The two were married on June 6, 1953, and Pierre remained Florence's cherished home until her passing, just shy of her 95th birthday.
Florence began her nursing career at St. Mary's Hospital, working in pediatrics until the birth of her first child. She continued to work intermittently at St. Mary's while raising her first five children. After welcoming her sixth child, Florence joined the team at Maryhouse, where she remained for 32 years, balancing her career with motherhood as she added two more children to her growing family.
In retirement, Florence embraced life with joy and energy. She enjoyed trips to Lake Havasu, dancing, bowling, games of chance, hosting lunches for her adult children, playing cards, tending to her yard, and so much more.
Florence was a devoted churchgoer and was involved in a women's group, finding strength and community in her faith. She hosted a card group with her special friends Donna and Lorraine twice a week which involved a few other family members. Saturday nights were spent playing Hand and Foot. Florence was competitive in all the games she played. Her days were full of activity and love. Holidays were special to Florence's heart including St Patrick's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and especially Christmas. Her favorite song was Silent Night and her favorite gathering was Christmas Eve in the Corcoran basement filled with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren living out the importance of being together.
