Paul Duane Hill, better known as Grandad, was born on January 18, 1944, to parents Clyde Hill and Isel N. (Mason) Hill at the Mooreland Hospital in Mooreland, Oklahoma. He was the first child in his family to be born in a hospital. Paul passed from this life on Friday, October 10, 2025, in the Vici Nursing Home, surrounded by his family.
The youngest son of ten siblings, Paul grew up in Curtis, Oklahoma. He attended elementary school in Curtis and graduated from Mooreland High School with the Class of 1963.
Paul was ornery from a young age. Each year at school, they had a Christmas gift exchange. One year, Paul drew his own name. When that happened, you were supposed to tell someone-but Paul didn't. Instead, he bought himself the present he wanted (shotgun shells), wrapped them, and put them under the tree. When his name was called, he opened his own gift. You'd think that after getting in trouble, he'd have learned his lesson-but the next year (and the one after that), when he didn't draw himself, he traded names until he did!
After graduation, Paul worked for Jim Caldwell at Junky Jim's. He met the love of his life, Linda Kay Ladd, in 1966 at a barn dance his sister Janice drove him to in his 1965 Ford Mustang. The reason Janice had to drive him was because Paul, in true Paul fashion, had decided to outrun the cops. When he was finally caught, his license was suspended, and his car was taken away by his parents and given to his sister.
Paul and Linda were married on August 5, 1967, at the First United Methodist Church in Woodward, Oklahoma. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Lisa (Hill) Hoffman, Barry Hill, and Jody Hill. The family lived in Woodward for a short time before settling in
Vici, Oklahoma, where Linda grew up.
Over the years, Paul held many jobs. He worked as a roughneck in the oilfield, as a pumper for Aquilla, at the pig farm east of Mooreland, and later at Sweet's Convenience Store in Vici. He opened the store every morning at 4 a.m., then spent his afternoons working at the mill for the Vici Co-Op. After retiring from the Co-Op, he kept busy helping at Sweet's.
Paul was a great storyteller-a gift passed down to his son, Barry. He was an avid fan of anything OU, especially OU football, and could often be found at Barry and Colleen's watching games.
A true craftsman, Paul loved working with wood-carving beautiful pieces from his imagination. He enjoyed giving his creations as gifts. If he wasn't on his front porch working on something, you could always find him in the shed behind his house, creating something new.
Paul's favorite holiday was Halloween. Every kid in town knew where to go on October 31st to get a full-size candy bar and a cold can of pop. He loved every minute of it and kept a running tally of trick-or-treaters each year.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Isel Hill; his wife, Linda Hill; brothers Chuck Hill, Bill Hill and wife Wilma, Dale Hill and wife Simmie, Don Hill and wife Roberta, and Wayne Hill and wife Betty; sisters Janice Haskins and Marjorie McDowell; Marjorie's first husband, Bob Crawford, and second husband, Skeet McDowell; sister-in-law Ann Hill; brother-in-law Doug McDowell; mother-in-law Ilo Ladd; sisters-in-law Myra Nebhut and husband Carl, NadaBeth Rolland and husband Paul, and Leona Newman and husband Jim; and brothers-in-law Marvin Ladd and wife Marty, and Gary Ladd.
He is survived by his daughter Lisa Hoffman and husband Russell; son Barry Hill and wife Colleen; and daughter Jody and husband Tony Nettles. Grandchildren Hilary Guerrero and husband Louie, Keenan Hoffman, Delissa Jantz and husband Josh, Emily Hill, Demietrius Nettles, and Norah Hill; close friend, Angie House; great-grandchildren Kaylynn Hoffman, Piper Jantz, and Leon Jantz; siblings Roscoe Hill, Joyce McDowell, and Jeannie and husband Duane Decker; brother-in-law Dale Haskins; and sisters-in-law Lorna Newman and Rita Malone. He also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.
Paul will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and the Vici community. For those who knew and loved him, we know that in his own words, he's "mighty fine" now and forever.
