English In Loving Memory of Pedro Celestino Martinez May 19, 1931 – July 9, 2025
Pedro Celestino Martinez, 94, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, in Sterling, Virginia. Born on May 19, 1931, in Santa Clara, Cuba, Pedro lived a life defined by faith, freedom, hard work, and unwavering love for his family and his adopted country-the United States of America. Raised on a farm in rural Cuba, Pedro learned the value of discipline, personal responsibility, and perseverance at a young age. As a young man, he moved to Havana, where he met and married the love of his life, Pilar. Together, they shared a deep commitment to building a life surrounded by faith and liberty, two principles that were overshadowed under communist rule in Cuba.
In 1965, Pedro and Pilar made the courageous decision to flee their homeland in search of freedom. Their escape was not only a personal act of faith and bravery, but it became a pivotal moment in history. Due to his background, Pedro played an instrumental role in the Camarioca Boatlift, a key event that paved the way for thousands of Cuban families to find refuge in the United States and later led to the Freedom Flights.
Upon arriving in America, Pedro and Pilar planted roots in Falls Church, Virginia, and proudly became part of a nation that honored the principles he sought out. Pedro built a life through honest work as a skilled mechanic, earning the respect of everyone around him for his integrity, work ethic, and quiet strength. Pedro deeply believed in the American Dream-not just as an ideal, but as a lived experience. He often reminded his children and grandchildren that freedom is never free and to live a life with dignity.
Pedro will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and especially his storytelling-whether recounting family history, sharing Cuban folklore, or delighting his grandchildren with clever riddles.
Pedro is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pilar, and his parents, Jose Martinez Claro and Flora Martin Hernandez. He is survived by his sons, Jose L. Martinez and Pedro Martinez Jr., daughter-in-law Monica Sarmiento, and his cherished grandchildren: Emily I. Martinez, Thomas R. Gaydos, and Melissa R. Maricle (engaged to Thomas). A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 3305 Glen Carlyn Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041. Interment will follow at 11:30 AM at Oakwood Cemetery, 401 N Roosevelt St, Falls Church, VA 22044. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Pedro's honor to Service Source, a charitable foundation that is a leading service provider and employer for individuals with disabilities: https://servicesource.org/support-servicesource/donate-now/.
The Martinez family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time.
