It is with both sorrow and celebration of a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Peter Frank DeYoung, known affectionately by all as Peter. He entered his eternal rest on June 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy as rich and enduring as the fertile soil he tended throughout his life. Born on May 14, 1935, in the picturesque town of Akkrum, Netherlands, Peter was a beacon of resilience, determination, and love. As the American novelist, Willa Cather, wrote, "The end is nothing; the road is all," and Peter's road was indeed an extraordinary journey.
Peter's story is one of courage and adventure, beginning with his move from the Netherlands to Centralia, Washington, when he was just a young man. For seven decades, he poured his heart and soul into the land he loved, creating a successful dairy farming business from the ground up. His work ethic was unmatched, his dedication to his craft absolute. His ethos aligned with the words of John F. Kennedy: "The farmer is the only man in our economy who buys everything at retail, sells everything at wholesale, and pays the freight both ways." Peter's life was a testament to the hard work, resilience, and courage that are the hallmarks of a farmer's life.
Peter's love for his work was only outshone by his love for his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Lulamae, who was his steadfast partner in all aspects of life. His beloved daughter, Nancy Hall, inherited his love for the land and determination to make a difference. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nancy DeYoung, who instilled in him the values of hard work, perseverance, and family, which he carried with him throughout his life.
Peter's life was a testament to the simple truth that "the quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence," as stated by Vince Lombardi. His dedication to his family, his farm, and his community was a shining example of a life lived with purpose and passion. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos to Peter's memorial page, as we collectively give thanks for his life and mourn his departure.
