Peter "Pete" Michael Medhurst, a 20-year resident of Churchton, Maryland, passed away on January 20, 2025 following a three-month battle with brain cancer. The lifelong resident of southern Anne Arundel County was 55 years old.
Pete was born on January 5, 1970 in Suitland, Maryland and raised in Harwood by his grandparents, Pete and Margaret Medhurst. He was a 1987 graduate of Southern High, where he played football and baseball and was a manager for boys basketball.
Pete grew up dreaming of becoming a radio broadcaster and through hard work and determination became one of the country's best. He worked for the Naval Academy Athletic Association for 28 years and became known as the "Voice of Navy Athletics."
Pete held a wide range of roles in the Baltimore-Washington media market, covering the Washington Nationals for 106.7 The Fan and the Baltimore Ravens for WBAL News Radio. He was the longtime track announcer at Rosecroft Raceway and an assistant sports supervisor for the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department.
Pete also found time to work as a basketball official and baseball umpire. He enjoyed volunteering in the community and was a recreation coach with both the Shady Side and South County Youth Athletics organizations.
Pete had an innate passion for everything about sports and loved playing golf and watching sports of all kinds, especially horse racing.
Above all, family meant the world to Pete and he found great enjoyment in combining his love for sports and family by watching his children's sporting events and coaching them.
Pete loved spending down time at home with his dog Bella, cat Shady and most of all his beloved family and friends.
Pete is survived by his wife of 27 years Brenda Medhurst and their three children - Ryan Joyce of Churchton, Cody Joyce (Jamie) of Damascus and Kelly Medhurst of Churchton.
Pete is also survived by his parents, Sue and Tim Malloy of Renick, WV, and siblings - Tim Malloy of Martinsburg, WV and Shannon Tyler (Nicky) of Frederick; parents-in-law Glen and Shirley Joyce of Shady Side; siblings-in-law Ken and Kris Joyce as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life for Pete Medhurst on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship, 377 West Central Avenue in Davidsonville. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pete's GoFundMe or Southern High Athletics, 4400 Solomons Island Road, Harwood, MD, 20776.

I had known Pete for some over 30 years and always enjoyed talking to him at the track or baseball or softball games. He loved his family, his work and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. My condolences to his family that Pete is gone far too soon

I´ve known Pete since I first filled in for him at Rosecroft in 2017. When I was in the process of looking for a broadcasting job in the aftermath of the pandemic, Pete informed me of an open position at Shenandoah Downs and asked if he could pass along my information. I obliged, and he helped me secure the job with the assist from Edison Hatter. I´m going into my fifth year as the Track Announcer there and it´s all thanks to Pete, a man who looks out for everyone he works with wether they´re seasoned vets or kids looking for their big break. Pete, you gave me my wings and now you have yours. Say hi to Brower for me at the racetrack Upstairs! We´ll miss you.

I´ve had the great fortune to know Pete for many years. Occasionally, we´d meet for lunch and spend a few hours catching up. Due to our busy travel schedules, we´d mostly text back and forth. Or engage on Twitter. I do not recall ever having an especially profound conversation. We mostly talked about life, families (he adored Ryan, Cody & Kelly), radio & TV broadcast shop talk, traffic tie-ups and speed trap warnings if one of us was driving a route the other had driven, current events, sports (naturally), and Navy sports (it goes without saying). It was always a treat to share thoughts on just about any topic. Pete´s brain tumor diagnosis was a gut punch because I survived brain tumor surgery and treatment several years ago. I knew exactly what he was going through. It is scary. I spent some time with him in the hospital after his surgery offering support, thoughts and prayers. I am glad Brenda and the kids were with him at the end. I will miss him terribly.

Pistol Pete walking around the hallways of Southern with anything paper he was holding rolled up as a pretend mic. He was always broadcasting and always kind. What a good guy.

Prayers for the family. He was a big personality.
