Phillip Victor Flench passed away on June 6, 2025, after a very short and hard-fought battle with a difficult form of leukemia.
Phil was born in Ohio, the son of Victor and Victoria Flench. While a student at Ashland College he met good friends who remained close to him throughout his life. He and his wife, Chris (Ebert) Flench started their careers in Ohio and began a family there. In his early career Phil worked in hospital human resources and later focused his efforts on Employee Assistance. The EAP field eventually brought the family to the DC area. Over many decades his career path altered and by time he retired he had developed and honed technical skills that took him a long way from those early days in human resources. Life was full of surprising turns and fascinating people.
Phil enjoyed a number of interesting hobbies throughout his life. In younger years he was an avid cyclist. He also connected with friends and family through a deep appreciation of music, as well as a dedication to his hometown Cleveland sports teams. In more recent years he focused his attention on astronomy and spent countless hours learning about new discoveries. He joined up with other local life-long learners and looked forward to making new friends and getting together with them at presentations on all kinds of topics.
He was a dedicated father and husband, and a proud grandfather of two wonderful boys. It was the joy of his retirement years to get to spend time with the whole family.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Flench.
He is survived by his wife, Chris Flench, daughter Katie (Flench) Ortega, son Drew Flench, son-in-law Ron Ortega, and two grandsons, as well sisters-in-law and nephews and nieces from both his and Chris's families.
An informal gathering for friends and family to celebrate our memories of Phil will take place at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City, July 30 between 4:00-7:00 PM.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a memorial gift to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society. Their assistance to people with blood cancers is generous and immensely helpful.
