Master Sergeant Phillip John Hampton United States Air Force retired, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 94. He was born in Detroit, Michigan December 6, 1930, to Andrew Scott Hampton and Nora (Poirier) Hampton.
A man of strong faith, Phillip was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and always placed his family first. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Ruth Ann Hampton, daughter Linda (Larry) Bowers, son Andrew Phillip Hampton (Sharon), daughter Cindy L. Gibson, daughter Ruthie M. Crone, eight grandchildren, Angela Bowers, Cristina Black, Bryan Crone, Natalie Cooley, Jessi Oram, Katie Rolka, Melinda Shields, Danielle Gibson and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Scott Hampton; mother, Nora Poirier Hampton; brothers Edsel, Neal, and Andrew Hampton; and twin sister, Phyllis Smith.
He attended S.E. Detroit High School where he ran track. After the Korean War broke out decided to join the Air Force in 1949 where he proudly served for 26 years, retiring in 1975. While serving in the USAF he was assigned to the 6970th Air Base Group/USAF Security Service and served in Korea from 1953-1954 where he oversaw the communication center in the DMZ. He also served at the National Security Agency at Ft. George G. Meade, MD three different times in the 60s and 70s as an instructor. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball as a pitcher and had a mean curveball. He served at NCPAC HQ Hawaii in the communications department. While in Hawaii he was also able to perfect his golf game.
MSGT Hampton was also stationed at Wurtsmith AFB, Oscoda, Michigan and eventually made it home after retiring in 1975. While living in Oscoda he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as lector, Eucharistic Minister, usher and member of the Knights of Columbus. He decided to continue his education and enrolled at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI and graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in sociology. After graduation he worked at a senior center in Oscoda, MI creating programs for the seniors and teaching them art. He was a voracious reader and was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting with oils and watercolors. He sold quite a few of his paintings at local gift shops and crafts fairs. He was an avid golfer at the local country club and loved fishing in Lake Huron. He eventually moved to Hanover, MD to be closer to family and joined St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Visitation will be on Monday July 14 from 6 to 8 p.m., Vigil Prayers at 7p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A. in Odenton, MD. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on July 15, 11:00 at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Hanover, MD. A Military Honors service will be held 1:00 pm on July 21, 2025, at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD.
