Reverend Powell Spurgeon, Jr. age 80, of Campbellsburg, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Born January 11, 1945 in Samuels, Kentucky, he was the son of Powell, Sr. and Eliza Ann (Holbrook) Spurgeon.
Reverend Spurgeon was a retired minister, having pastored Christ Cares General Baptist Church and Good Shepherd General Baptist Church, both in New Albany, Indiana, and New Zion General Baptist Church in Louisville. Reverend Spurgeon also worked as a landscaper, painter and in general maintenance.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching Westerns on TV.
His surviving family includes his wife, the former Carol Malone, to whom he was married on March 16, 1967 in Louisville; one daughter and son-in-law, Leeann and James Williams of Campbellsburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Benny and Tina Spurgeon of Louisville; and three grandchildren: Kera Merritt, and Jaelynn and Presley Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Oliver "Buddy" Spurgeon, Ellis Spurgeon, Gilbert Spurgeon, Charles "Wayne" Spurgeon, and David "Bo" Spurgeon; and three sisters: Helen Warnell, Nancy Clum and Sue Stotts.
Hospice Chaplain Ervin Hollins will conduct the memorial services.
