Raymond Richard Maruska, age 66, of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away on July 05, 2025, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on October 10, 1958, in Duluth, Ray lived a life marked by resilience, creativity, and a deep love for family and friends. Ray was at the tender age of six when he and his eight siblings experienced the unimaginable loss of their beautiful mother, Irene Maruska. A short time later, their father suffered a traumatic brain injury and was no longer able to live independently or care for his nine children; Ray and three of his young siblings were raised together in a foster home in Floodwood, under the care of Zula Pelofske.
After high school graduation, Ray honorably served in the United States Army, primary stationed in Germany. Upon returning home he became an independent flooring installation contractor for many years. His beautiful tile work lives on in many of his family and friend's homes. Against all odds, the nine Maruska siblings reconnected as adults and forged an unbreakable bond - a testament to the strength only a Maruska could know. It brings comfort to his family knowing that Ray is now reunited with his beloved parents in his eternal home. Ray's greatest passion was restoring classic vehicles, a talent that elevated him to a legendary status in the car world. Known nationwide for his meticulous craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind restorations, Ray didn't just fix cars - he brought history back to life with modern twists. His garage was not just a workplace, but a sanctuary where rusted metal was reborn under his skilled hands.
But perhaps even more remarkable than his skill was his generosity in sharing it. Ray never hesitated to pass on his knowledge to anyone willing to learn. He wasn't the kind of man to simply give you a fish - he'd teach you how to fish, hand you a wrench, and show you how to build something with your own hands. Though he carried himself with quiet strength and stoic resolve, those who truly knew Ray were lucky enough to experience the enormous heart he reserved for the people he loved. He was steady, loyal, and deeply devoted - the kind of man who made others feel stronger just by standing beside him. But for all his accomplishments, Ray's most meaningful role was as a father, grandfather, and partner.
He is survived by his daughter, Blaize (Levi) Shrake, and grandson, Moxly Shrake - his pride and joy. Ray and Blaize had a bond so unbreakable it defied words. They gave each other exactly what the other needed in life, and both were profoundly blessed by that love. He was also blessed to share a soul-deep connection with his partner and best friend, Ginny Tuominen. In his final chapter, Ginny cared for Ray with unwavering compassion, providing hospice care in her home and ensuring he was surrounded by love and comfort every step of the way. He leaves behind by his siblings: Marlene Johnson, Tom Maruska, Jim (Gayle) Maruska, Susan (Rodney) Pelofske, Marilyn (Mark) Denno, Laurie (Joel) Korby, Dennis Maruska, and Brian (Janine) Kozak. Ray is also remembered by many nieces and nephews as well as foster siblings Mary, Suzanne, and Linda.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Larry Johnson, and Zula and John Pelofske.
Ray's legacy will live on in the cars he revived, the family and friends he held dear, and the countless lives he touched with his heart, hands, and humanity.

Ray will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery, in Saginaw, at a later date.
