Ray joined the First Reformed Church at age 40 and served on consistory. At the age of 50 he moved to Burke and purchased the Burke Bowling Alley and Café.
On June 1, 1987, Ray married Mary Lea Dyk (Dykstra). He operated the Bowling Alley and Café for ten years and then they moved back to Platte in October 1994.
