Richard Bass Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 8, 2025.
Richard Lee Bass, age 76, affectionately known as "Papa" to his grandchildren, returned to his heavenly home peacefully on July 5, 2025. Richard was the son of Edgar Leroy "Red" Bass and Mable Cratch Bass, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cathy Bradshaw Bass, and his brother, Edgar Leroy Bass.
A graduate of Tarboro High School and Atlantic Christian College, Richard lived a life marked by kindness, selflessness, and a deep love for others. He never met a stranger; his quick wit, warm smile, and easy laughter made everyone feel at home in his presence. He had a unique gift for seeing the humor in life's everyday moments and spreading joy wherever he went.
Richard proudly served in the United States Navy as a dental technician, a role he valued for the knowledge and experience it provided, even though he later pursued a different career path. He worked in management within the forklift industry and later transitioned into logistics, where he was respected for his work ethic and integrity.
Richard was known for his legendary cheesecakes, which he loved to share with friends, family, and even local dental and doctor's offices, always delivered with a warm greeting and heartfelt appreciation. Acts of service were at the core of who he was. Richard's other passions included golf, music, tennis, and spending time with his two cherished dogs, Clara and Rocky. He especially treasured outings with them, such as biscuit runs and trips to the local pond to watch the ducks, which were among his favorite rituals. A man of quiet charm and classic style, Richard was rarely seen without a neatly pressed shirt and the familiar scent of Old Spice. His starched button-downs and timeless cologne became part of his signature. Above all else, he found his greatest happiness in time spent with his family, whom he adored beyond measure.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Richard found strength in his faith and joy in serving others. His quiet acts of kindness and steady love left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He is survived by his two children, Jeff Allen Bass of Conetoe and Beth Bass Brehler and husband Andrew James Brehler of Mebane; seven grandchildren, Joshua Coley and wife Brittney, Jacob Coley and wife Shelby, Madison Weaver and husband Hunter, Holly Kiser and husband Doc, Gryffin Brehler, Max Brehler, Joel Bass; and nine great-grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy.
Richard will be remembered always for his gentle heart, generous spirit, and the way he made everyone feel like family. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, July 19th, at 11:00am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Rocky Mount, NC.
