Richard James Gabriel, known affectionately to all as Rick, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, in
Austin, Texas. Born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on May 31, 1968, Rick's 56 years of life were marked by an unwavering optimism, a sense of humor that could light up a room, and a loving nature that made him a cornerstone in the lives of his family and friends.
Rick's journey began as the cherished son of Patrick and Mary Gabriel. His life was further enriched by his loving wife Angela, with whom he shared an enduring partnership, and his adoring children, Tyler, Spencer, and Andrew Smith, who were his pride and joy. The family circle extended to include his father-in-law Donald Snyder, mother-in-law Mary Ann Snyder, brother Randy Gabriel, sister Amy Gabriel, sisters-in-law Amy Hanson and Kim Snyder, brothers-in-law Ron Griswold and Jason Snyder, nieces Mattingly Snyder and Tainna Carrillo, daughter-in-law Caitlyn Smith, and his precious grandchildren, Rowan Seymour and Peyton Smith.
Rick's educational pursuits led him to the University of Iowa, where he earned a BA in Communications, setting the stage for a successful career. His professional life was distinguished by his role as Vice President of Sales at Macy's, where his charismatic leadership and innovative strategies left an indelible mark on the industry.
Outside of work, Rick's passions were as diverse as they were fulfilling. He was a dedicated coach for his sons' sports teams, instilling in them the values of teamwork and perseverance. The golf courses knew him well, as did the poker tables where he enjoyed friendly Texas Hold 'Em games. His love for travel took him to new destinations, yet he was always a steadfast fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Philadelphia Eagles, never missing a chance to cheer on his favorite teams.
Rick's life was a testament to the things he cherished most-family gatherings that echoed with laughter, memorable vacations where he enjoyed his toes in the sand and the sun on his face. He had a knack for storytelling, often regaling his listeners with tales that were both humorous and heartfelt. His optimism was contagious, and his ability to see the good in every situation was a gift to all who knew him.
To say that Rick will be missed is an understatement. His absence will be felt acutely, not only in the big moments but in the quiet ones he so often filled with joy and laughter. Yet, his legacy lives on-a legacy of love, laughter, and the indomitable spirit of a man who faced life with a smile and an open heart.
Rick's life will be celebrated by his family and friends, who take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire them. They will cherish the memories of a man who was not only the heart of their family but also a friend to all, a mentor to many, and a beacon of light in the lives of those he touched.
