Richard Lee Hunt, age 80, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at McLaren Port Huron Hospital. A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, 520 W. Main St.,
Owosso, MI 48867, followed by military honors. Rev. Dr. Tom Rundel will preside over the service. The family will receive friends from 5-8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Private interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc.
Richard was born on April 23, 1945, in Chesaning, Michigan, to the late Eugene F. and Mildred Rae (Smith) Hunt. His formative years were spent working and playing on the family farms. After graduating from Ovid High School in 1964, he embarked on a path of service, joining the United States Coast Guard in 1965. For six years, including one tour in Vietnam, he dedicated himself to his country, instilling in him a sense of discipline and community that he carried throughout life. Upon leaving the Coast Guard in 1971, Richard found his calling with Consumers Power as a power lineman, excelling at his work and creating strong friendships. His skill and knowledge were shared with countless others when he transitioned to a teaching role at the Consumers Energy Training Center. His hard work and dedication were evident in all he did until his well-deserved retirement.
On July 5, 1972, Richard and Sandy were married in Owosso. They lived there along with their children, Michelle Hunt-Ruggles, Ryan Hunt, and Denise (Terry) Beasley, until moving to Marshall in 1992. Their marriage would endure until Sandy's passing in 2010.
Richard will be missed by his grandchildren, Charlie (Grace), Samantha, Ashley, Isaac, Lydia, and Simon, and all of whom he adored. He also had great-grandchildren: Walter, Elaine, CJ, Donald, Cooper, and Oliver.
Richard was the youngest of his siblings. Shirley Coon and her husband Harvey, Stanley, Donald, Wayne, and Robert, each preceded him in death. His memories with them were held close to his heart.
Richard brightened the lives of those around him. His hands were rarely still, since he was always fixing, building, or tinkering. He had great love of woodworking. He also loved his time spent outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or camping. Still, nothing compared to his time spent with his family. He also made great memories with his friends, particularly his best friends of over 50 years, Gary and Sandy Goodwin.
Richard remained a proud member of the American Legion in Owosso and of the Moose Lodge in Marshall, where he made many close friends through the years. His life is reminiscent of service, family, and hard work. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate the countless lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind.
