Richard F. McCarthy, formally of McLean Virginia peacefully passed away at Ridgefield Crossings on March 1 2025. Richard grew up in the Bronx NY. His family were members of the St Brendan's Church. Graduated from Mt St Michaels High School in 1955, and soon after earned a Masters degree in the arts, at New York University.
He soon took a teaching position at the Carnegie Mellon University. Being a professor in American Literature, a close friend offered him a new position with the Education Department in Washington DC. Assigned to India and Tibet, he spent many years overseas working with and teaching potential scholars " American Culture."
When he returned to the states, he worked again in the Department of Education. Soon he was assigned to the President's Advisory Council on Continuing Education, being an Associate Director, representing the Department of Education.
His position was eventually terminated by President Reagan. Politically motivated he claimed. Conversations always avoided politics. Soon after that, he became the silent partner to a German Gourmet deli in the DC area, that was run by his partner Raimund. This "deli" was featured many times in the Washington Post and was well known for its culinary delights.
Eventually " Ray " sold the business and "Dick + Ray " enjoyed retirement to the fullest extent until Ray passed away a few years later.
Richard was predeceased by his brother Joseph, sister Evelyn aka: Lala, nephew Stephen and life partner Raimund Pagani.
"Uncle Ritchie " as he was lovingly known, will be sadly missed by nephews :Joseph McCarthy, and his wife Susan, Kenneth McCarthy, and his wife Karin, nieces Kathleen McCarthy and her friend Wayne Picard, Lorraine ( Dede ) Mack and her husband Eddie. Many great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer's research would be appreciated by the family.
The family will receive friends Sunday March 9 between the hours of 2:00- 4:00 at the Brookfield Funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 3:30.
