Chesapeake, Virginia - Richard "Dick" Warren Merson, 82, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away on October 11, 2025. Born on January 4, 1943, in Fullerton, Maryland (Baltimore County), he lived a life marked by dedication, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to excellence throughout his long career.
Dick retired as Senior Vice President of Boise Cascade, a leader in the paper and engineered wood products industry. Over his more than four decades in manufacturing and management, he earned a reputation for leadership, integrity, and an exceptional focus on safety. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to accident prevention and employee well-being, he was awarded the Executive Eagle Award by the Pulp & Paper Safety Association, one of the industry's highest honors for executive safety leadership.
His work took him and his family to many places over the years, including Maryland, West Virginia, Louisiana, Canada, and Alabama. After retirement, he settled in Moorefield, West Virginia, before relocating to Chesapeake, Virginia, to be near family in his later years. Known for his practical nature and fondness for animals and wildlife, he preferred simplicity in both life and passing.
He is survived by his daughters, Martha Ellen "Marti" Merson Geck and Michelle Lynn "Mickey" Merson Scott; and his son-in-law, Brad Scott, who, together with Mickey, provided care and companionship during his final years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Alvin Merson and Cornelia Ethel Michelfelder; his beloved wife of 34 years, Constance "Connie" Sue Merson; and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Merson (née Gamble), mother of his daughters, Mickey and Marti.
He requested cremation and asked that arrangements be kept simple and private, in the spirit of the life he lived - practical, direct, and free of unnecessary fuss.
