Richard “Rich” Steve Holman, 77, of Blue Grass, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Alleghany Health and Rehab in Clifton Forge.
He was born June 25, 1947, in Frogue, Ky., a son of the late Robert Hoy and Lilly Hazel Whitley Holman.
At age 11, Rich’s mother and sister died in a tragic accident, and he was lovingly raised by his aunt, Opal Groce of Burkesville, Ky. She encouraged him to attend Berea College, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree. Upon graduation of Berea, Rich enlisted in the U.S. Navy and continued to serve his country as an Ahmeric linguist/analyst in Ethiopia for the National Security Agency.
On Aug. 7, 1971, he married the love of his life, Linda Lee Deavers. They lived in Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, where Rich had a Serve-Pro business before they moved to Highland County. In Monterey, Rich was owner and operator of Gallery of Mountain Secrets for 15 years, as well as Cherry Hill Bed and Breakfast for 25 years. Above all, Rich will be remembered for his big heart and his passion for all things he loved.
A motorcycle enthusiast, Rich was appointed by then Gov. Mark Warner, and again by then Gov. Tim Kaine, as a member of the Motorcycle Advisory Council for Virginia, serving along with his motorcycling friend, Dale Coyner, and chairing its tourism committee for five years. Rich was a nine-year board member of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of Highlanders for Responsible Development. He was proud to have been a founding board member of The Highland Center, where he served seven years, three as treasurer. Rich was mayor of the town of Monterey from 2014-2018, and during his tenure helped the town purchase its permanent location on Main Street, in the historic Campbell House.
He crossed the country several times with Moto-Electra race team, as a valuable team member.
In addition to his parents, and Aunt Opal Groce, he was predeceased by sister, Linda Glee Holman; brother, David Holman; and cousin Sue Carter.
Surviving in addition to his wife Linda of 53 years are his half-brother, James Fowler of Florida; cousins, Teresa Rutledge and Michelle Carter; brothers-in-law, Daniel Deavers and wife Ann of Fulk Run, and Steven Deavers and wife Cherry of New Hope; niece, Erin Deavers; close friend, Brian Richardson of Blue Grass; as well as his beloved dog, Shadow.
In accordance with Rich’s wishes, his body was cremated and the family will commemorate his life at a later date.
