In Loving Memory of Richard Keene Sugars
April 12, 1949 - March 25, 2025
With broken hearts and profound love, we share the passing of Richard Keene Sugars, who left us far too soon on March 25, 2025, at the age of 75. A devoted husband, father, cherished grandfather, twin brother, teacher, healer, coach, and lifelong student of the world-Richard lived a life full of passion, intellect, humor, and extraordinary heart.
Born in Vallejo, California, on April 12, 1949, Richard was one of twin boys to Art and Barbara Sugars. He grew up in Belmont after moving from San Francisco in the early 1950s, attending McDougal, Barrett, and Cipriani Elementary Schools, Ralston Middle School, and graduating from Carlmont High School in 1967. Even in childhood, he was known for his quick wit, athletic talent, and boundless curiosity about the world around him.
A lifelong learner, Richard pursued a remarkable academic path. He earned a Doctor of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West, dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Biology from San Francisco State University, and an Associate of Arts from the College of San Mateo. He also held a California State Teaching Credential in Life Sciences and English for K-12 and taught high school English early in his career at Lincoln High School in San Francisco. Whether in a classroom, a clinic, or at home with his family, Richard's sharp mind and generous spirit inspired everyone he encountered. He especially loved giving gifts-just to see someone smile.
His career reflected the depth and variety of his interests: from working with dolphins and killer whales at Marine World Africa USA in the 1970s, to teaching and coaching youth football with Coastside Pop Warner, to healing others through chiropractic care. A karate black belt and martial artist, he was also featured in a 1970s Karate magazine., He brought discipline and dedication to everything he did.
Richard was also a passionate antiques dealer, a history enthusiast, and a lover of science, astronomy, and all things cosmic. He could identify any car, plane, or artifact by era and saw history not just as facts, but as living stories that shaped the present. He taught his children to never stop learning. His universe was vast-and he made sure those around him knew theirs could be, too.
Above all, Richard was deeply loved-and he loved deeply in return. He was the protector, the steady hand, the storyteller, and always brought laughter and humor to the family. His wisdom and strength created a safe and vibrant world for those who knew him. His loss is immeasurable.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate, Manuela Hiwahiwa Alohanani Sugars, his parents Art and Barbara Sugars, and his twin brother Robert Sugars, who passed away at just 18 years old. We find peace in knowing that he is now reunited with them, and especially with Manuela-the love of his life-with whom he shared a bond that transcended time.
He is survived by his daughters, Sarah Sugars and Emily Tuupo, his son-in-law Tupo Tuupo, and his beloved grandchildren-Tupo "Kai" Tuupo and Kela Healani Tuupo-who knew him simply as Papa. They were the joy of his world, and to them, he was-and will always be-their compass, their steady hand, and their guardian angel.
A memorial and celebration of Richard's life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1106 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Carlos, CA. This date holds deep meaning for his family, symbolizing the enduring love between Richard and Manuela. We invite family and friends who knew and loved Richard to join us in honoring his memory and celebrating the extraordinary life of a man who will be forever missed and forever loved.
