Rita Ann Wendell (neé Foster) was born on May 30, 1943 in Switchback, West Virginia. She passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on July 12, 2025. She was 82.

Rita was a fierce animal advocate, a free spirit who marched to her own beat. She was witty, loved having fun, and was deeply loyal. She had many professions including Hair Stylist, Marketing Executive, and Collections Officer for the City of Rockport, but her true love was writing. She published three books, including a biography on growing up in a West Virginia coal camp.

Rita was the youngest of ten children, and was preceded in death by her parents: Nellie Mae Dent Foster and Dillard Foster; siblings: Betty Jo Fox, Willowdean Legg, Harold Foster, Naomi Cheek, Maybelle Beck, Brooksey Guilliams, Gaynelle D'Arco, Eula Pogue, and Henry Foster.

She is survived by her daughter: Debra Wendell; son-in-law: Jeff Evans; grandson: Becket Wendell-Evans; and numerous beloved neices and nephews.

All services will be private.
