Robert Edward "Ed" Archibald, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on April 26, 1947, in Leaksville, NC, to the late Robert L. and Rebecca F. (McBride) Archibald, Ed's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love for his family, community, and country.
Ed's early years were spent in Zanesville, Ohio, where he graduated from Zanesville High School in 1965. During his high school years, he distinguished himself as an All-Ohio defensive football player. His pursuit of education led him to the University of Findlay, Central Ohio Technical College, and Ohio University, Zanesville, where he furthered his knowledge and skills.
In 1968, Ed answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Army and completing two tours in Vietnam. His service from 1968 to 1972 was marked by bravery and commitment.
On June 9, 1973, Ed married the love of his life, Kathy A. (Gladman) Archibald. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures over 51 wonderful years. Ed's career in newspaper advertising began at The Times Recorder in Zanesville, a role that would take him to the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine, before he returned to Southeastern Ohio in 1994. He retired as the Advertising Director of The Daily Jeffersonian after 19 years, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication.
Ed's commitment to his community was evident through his active involvement in various organizations. He was a proud member of Rotary International, the Chamber of Commerce, Literacy Volunteers of America, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. His contributions to these organizations reflected his belief in giving back and making a positive impact on the lives of others.
An avid golfer, Ed was a member of the Cambridge Country Club, where he spent many enjoyable hours on the greens. Music was another of Ed's passions, and he delighted in playing live music, sharing his talent and joy with those around him.
Ed's sense of humor and warm personality endeared him to all who knew him. He cherished the time spent with his family, creating memories that will be treasured forever. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his children, Alisha (Billy) Colon, Nicholas Robert, and Kari (Jeremy) Thiel; and his beloved grandchildren, Ian, Logan, Jack, Rebecca, Chance, and Henry. Ed also leaves behind his sister, Catherine Archibald-Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; as well as his in-laws, Chester R. "Junior" and Evelyn Rebecca Gladman, of Zanesville
A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be held at a later date. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Guernsey for their compassionate care and suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Guernsey or the Alzheimer's Association in Ed's honor.
Ed Archibald's life was a rich tapestry of love, service, and dedication. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and his memory will be cherished forever. Please leave your condolences for the family on Ed's tribute page at www.bundy-lawfuneralhome.com.
