Robert Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2025.
Dr. Robert W. Harris, age 72, of Mantua died at home surrounded by family on Monday, September 15, 2025. Robert (Bob) was born in Woodbury, NJ to Viola (Karkuff) Harris and Robert Harris.

Bob's survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Harris, his two children, Kyle Harris and Sarah Harris, his son-in-law, Michael Piontek, his two grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah, his sister, Louise Fabiano and many cousins.

Bob graduated from Woodbury High School in 1970. He attended the University of Delaware and in 1977, he received his degree in veterinary medicine (VMD) from the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed at Greenfields Veterinary Hospital before establishing Pitman Animal Hospital in 1987 where he spent the rest of his career until retirement.

Bob was an avid and highly skilled builder for the vast majority of his life. His first project was renovating an apartment at his grandmother's house which became his and Dorothy's first home in 1974. He then designed and built the home where he raised his family and lived for 43 years. In 1987, he converted a house into his practice, Pitman Animal Hospital, and later renovated a second practice, Clayton Veterinary Associates. In the spring of 1998, he completed the renovation of a shore house that he dedicated to Dorothy. A few years later, he took a year off from practicing medicine to design and build his state-of-the-art animal hospital. Over the years he's completed many projects at his children's homes and in service to others. With family and friends, he completed his "last big project", a garage at the family cabin in the Adirondacks.

Bob dedicated much of his life to serving others. He served as a Deacon and Trustee at the Presbyterian Church at Woodbury. He was an appointed member of the Mantua Township Planning Board for 35 years. Following Hurricane Mitch in 1999, he went on his fist international service trip to Honduras. Starting in 2000, he participated in and led many service trips to Honduras and around the world with Habitat for Humanity. In the 2000s, Bob became very active with Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity, building countless homes and serving on the Board of Directors.

Bob had a love for travel and outdoor adventure which began as a child with camping trips with his parents. In college, he participated in the outdoors club which solidified his love for hiking and climbing. He had a deep love of the Adirondacks where he often paddled, hiked and climbed with Kyle, Sarah and friends. Over the years he also enjoyed many trips to the Adirondacks with Urban Trekkers. In 2022, he completed a 30-year feat, summiting all 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks with Kyle.

Bob's first international trip was in 1996 to Ecuador, summiting Cotapaxi (19,347'). He went on to summit 3 more high altitude mountains, making a final summit of Kilimanjaro, with Kyle and Sarah in 2011. In 2019, he enjoyed his last international hiking trip in Patagonia, Argentina with Sarah, Mike and Bernie.

Bob also had a love for the water. He enjoyed summers down the Jersey shore swimming in the bay and bodysurfing at the beach. As a child, he was introduced to sailing and canoeing by his father. As an adult, he enjoyed boating and kayaking and became a dedicated sailor. Later in life, he would enjoy many sailing trips in the Caribbean, first with Sarah in 2001 and later with many friends.

While he had many passions, his greatest love was for his family. He cared deeply for Dorothy and often found comfort in her strength (and chocolate chip cookies). He was very proud of the achievements of his children and found great joy with his grandchildren.

To Dot, Sarah and Kyle. On behalf of everyone here at Kisampa in Tanzania- Our sincere condolences to you all. Bob´s interest in our mission to protect habitat for wildlife has been instrumental in our ability to add significantly to the land under conservation. In honour of your your family´s contribution to this effort the area will now be known as Harris Forest and we are building a a viewing bench with a plaque overlooking the forest so Bob will always be remembered when people sit there. We hope you can come and visit at some stage.
Our thoughts are with you all.
Best wishes, Rob, the Barbour family and everyone at Kisampa, Tanzania

Dr. Harris was a wonderful friend to our community and caring for our pets - he was an even nicer human being. We first met in 1996 at the Rabies Clinic, which was just another example of his service to the community. He cared for our Golden Retrievers - first Nugget for 12 years and then Bella for 14 1/2 years, followed by our tuxedo cats (Oreo and Jo-Jo) this past year.

His legacy will live on in his children and grandchildren, in his stewardship for Habitat for Humanity, and in his Veterinarian Practice, PAH. I never knew we shared a love for the Adirondacks - his life is an example for us all to follow. Thank you, and rest in peace, Dr. Harris!

We, like many of his family and friends, are diminished by his passing. He was so good to his patients who could only woof, tweet and meow their thanks for his great care and skills as a vet. He made the world a better place and for that and all he accomplished for others, we are grateful and yet saddened by his leaving so soon...may he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him. I worked with Bob back in the early 70's when we were at Greenfields. I remember him to be such a great surgeon. I always thought that he liked surgery more than anything. He loved his wife and his children were little back then. A funny memory was when he had brought his tuna sandwich for lunch in the morning. He was thinking about that lunch all day. He couldn't wait to get to eat it. He went downstairs to his favorite desk to relax and enjoy when he found out that the cat had already eaten it. HAHAHAH. He was so devastated! And all I could do was laugh. He was a great vet, great person, great family man and oh my what a great life he had. I was glad to know him. So sorry to all his family and friends.

Bob was of valuable assistance to me in establishing my own veterinary facility, the Cedarbrook Animal Hospital. He drew up the initial plans for the hospital design. One of the best veterinary surgeons I had the pleasure of working with I often used him for a second opinion. I find it amazing to see how he was able to also contribute to countless other charities while exploring the world and climbing mountains. You will be missed by your family and close friends but also countless others that you helped along the way.

I was so sorry to hear of Bob's passing but I am glad that family was with him in the end. Bob hired me as one of his technicians in 1997 and I worked with this kind man for quite a few years before the Clayton practice was bought out by Dr. Morgan. I always admired Bob for how much he cared and all of the missions for which he led and took part. I am honored to have known him not only as a member of his staff but also as a friend. Please accept my condolences.
