Robert W. Hasbrouck, Jr. "Bob" died peacefully with family by his side on December 27, 2024 at his residence. A longtime resident of New Providence, he was 91.
Bob was born in Georgia and was the son of Marjorie and Major General Robert W. Hasbrouck, Sr. He was a graduate of St. Albans Preparatory School in Washington, DC and followed in his father's footsteps by attending the United States Military Academy West Point. Bob graduated from West Point in 1955 in the top 10% of his class. He served in the United States Army for six years before his honorable discharge.
While stationed in Fulda, Germany, Bob met and married his wife, Astrid. Returning to the United States with the Army, they lived in Texas for nine months and then for several years in Ohio. Then they moved to Brooklyn, New York, and Bob worked for Chase Manhattan Bank and also earned his MBA from New York University. He spent 30 years at Chase working in the Institutional Investment Department, rising to become a Vice President in 1969 and remaining a consultant for seven more years after the unit was sold to Union Bank of Switzerland.
Moving to New Providence with his wife and two daughters in 1968, Bob was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church where he served for 19 years as chairman of the Social Ministry Committee, followed by 30 years as Finance Chairman. He also participated in several of Faith Lutheran Church's outreach ministries to the needy, in particular, Family Promise of Union County.
Following his retirement, Bob was President of the Hasbrouck Family Association (HFA) where he led the Board of Directors in maintaining and displaying the family's two 18th century stone houses on historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz, New York. In addition to tracing his father's side roots to the Huguenots, he also was able to trace his mother's side roots back to Major-General Nathanael Greene, a leading American general in the Revolutionary War. Bob's military training served him well later in life, as he continued with daily pushups and sit-ups into his 80s. He enjoyed music, travel, photography, birdwatching and tennis.
Bob is survived by Astrid, his beloved wife of 66 years, his daughter Melinda (Douglas) Donsky and grandchildren Tyler and Kate Donsky. He is also survived by several nephews and a niece. Bob was predeceased by his parents, his sister Margo Deschodt, and his daughter Karin Hasbrouck.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Faith Lutheran Church, followed by the burial of his cremains in the grave of his parents in West Point Cemetery. Contributions in Bob's memory can be made to Faith Lutheran Church at 521 South St., New Providence, NJ 07974 or by visiting https://famfaith.org/donate/ or to Family Promise Union County by visiting https://familypromise.org/what-we-do/fp-union-county/
