Robert James O’Gwynn, 79, of Brandon, Mississippi went to be with the Lord on July 25, 2025, while surrounded by his family. Robert was born on January 30, 1946, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to James Leroy and Mary Almedia O’Gwynn. He attended Hattiesburg High School. In December of 1963, he married Barbara, and together they had four children. Robert joined the Navy in 1963 and served on the USS Saint Paul during the Vietnam War. Later, he went on to graduate from Hinds Jr. College and attended Mississippi College. He owned the O’Gwynn Insurance Agency where he worked as an insurance broker.
Robert attended the Church of God and Assembly of God. He ministered the gospel through the Word of God and music. He wrote over four hundred songs and recorded six albums. He loved attending ball games for his grandchildren. He enjoyed riding the grands on his back, throwing balls with the boys and holding baby dolls for his granddaughters. His grandchildren loved spending time in his music room with him while singing and playing his guitar. In his spare time, he loved watching the Atlanta Braves.
Mr. O’Gwynn was preceded in death by his mother, Mary O’Gwynn and his father, James O’Gwynn. He is survived by his wife, Barbara O’Gwynn; his children, Robin Hittle (Ken) of Pearl, MS, Angela Biard (Joe) of Brandon, MS, Greg O’Gwynn (Melanie) of Brandon, MS and April Parker (Branden) of Brandon, MS; his grandchildren, Ryan Taylor, Aaron Exum, Kayla Morse, Whitney Sebren, Hannah Sanderson, Baylee Boggan, Noah Parker, Makenzie Parker, and Elijah O’Gwynn; his great-grandchildren, Reed Taylor, Camden Purvis, Paislee Purvis, Ridge Taylor, Jase Sebren, Madden Exum, Wyatt Boggan, Ellie Sebren, Bristol Exum, Aspyn Boggan, and Lucy Boggan; his great-great grandson, Kyson Taylor; his sisters, Brenda Sullivan (James) of Collierville, TN and Carol Murdock (Eric) of Moselle, MS; and his brother, James D. O’Gwynn (Kitty) of Cabot, AR.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon on Thursday, July 31st at 1:00 P.M. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 30th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. and Thursday, July 31st from 12:00-1:00 PM. Robert will be laid to rest in Hebron Cemetery immediately following the ceremony.
