Murl Richard Pozil, 89, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.
A lifelong resident of La Porte, Murl took great pride in his community and the many friendships he built over the years. His home was a reflection of his personality – warm, welcoming and filled with the things he loved. Decorated with Native American art and nature-inspired pieces, it revealed his deep appreciation for the outdoors and his quiet, spiritual connection to the world around him.
Murl worked for many years at several local businesses, including the garden center at Kmart, Mae's Mart and Zeldin Shoe Store. He enjoyed his work and the simple pleasure of meeting people from all walks of life, always ready with a friendly smile or a story to share.
Known affectionately as a "dog whisperer," Murl had an extraordinary way with animals – especially dogs, who seemed to sense his gentle heart. He also loved to browse Goodwill stores, finding joy in uncovering hidden treasures and giving new life to old things. In recent weeks, he found peace listening to the soothing tones of Native American flute music, a sound that mirrored his calm and reflective spirit.
Above all, Murl had a deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His faith was the foundation of his life and the quiet strength behind his kind and compassionate nature. Murl often spoke of God's goodness and wasn't shy about sharing his faith with others. Whether through a conversation, a helping hand or a simple act of kindness, he reflected Christ's love in all he did. Those who knew him could see that his heart belonged to the Lord, and his life was a living testimony to that faith.
Murl loved life and cultivated many special relationships over the years. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service celebrating Murl's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Springville Community Church, located on the hill behind Family Express at the corner of U.S. 20 and SR 39 in La Porte.
