Roger G. Brown, a devoted teacher, coach, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the Southern Ohio Medical Hospice Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, on July 7, 2025, at the age of 77. A lifelong member of the Vanceburg Lions Club, Roger dedicated his life to service, education, and sports.
Born in Vanceburg, Kentucky, on April 24, 1948, Roger was the son of the late Bertram H. and Juanita Edington Brown. He graduated from Lewis County High School in the Class of 1966 and began his career in education by attending Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, where he earned a scholarship to play basketball. He later returned to Kentucky, where he completed his Master's degree in Elementary Education from Morehead State University.
Roger's passion for sports extended well beyond his years as an athlete. He was a coach in football, basketball, and baseball, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes. Roger was also known for his impressive skills as a softball player, and his competitive spirit inspired many.
Beyond sports and service, Roger had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed raising a garden, particularly taking great pride in his tomato plants. He also found joy in trap shooting, a hobby that allowed him to unwind and connect with friends.
His commitment to community service was equally remarkable. Roger recently completed his tenure as President of the Vanceburg Lions Club, a role he held with pride. He also served as the Past District Governor for Lions Club District 43Y from 1990-1991. Through these positions, he made a significant difference in his local community and supported numerous charitable initiatives that aligned with the Lions Club's mission of serving those in need.
Roger's legacy of kindness, leadership, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a mentor, a coach, a dedicated public servant, and a cherished friend. His presence will be missed by the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Jeremy (Rachel) Fraley of Greenfield, Ohio; his grandson, Hudson Fraley; his granddaughter, Mia Fraley; double cousins, Mike (Rachel) Edington of Vanceburg, KY, Rick (Pam) Edington of Elida, OH; cousin, Ann Hurst of Sterling, Virginia; and Jeanna (Bill) Melton and their children, Bobby and Emily of Vanceburg, KY.
