Ronald John Martin, age 88, of Negaunee, passed away early Monday morning, January 6, 2025, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he resided for the last couple of years.
A devoted husband to Beverly J. Martin for 38 years, Ron is survived by a loving blended family that includes sons: Ronald, Jr., and Michael, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, Larry (Cathy) of Negaunee, Jeff (Taylor) of Hudsonville, MI, John (Cindy) Kump of Austin, Texas and Todd (Diane) Schoepke of Highland, MI; as well as daughters: Connie (Greg) White of Lino Lakes, MN, Rhonda (Steve) Hudson of Granger, IN and Tari (Mark) Wainio of Negaunee. He cherished his role as a grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Ron was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, having served during the Korean War from 1953 to 1957 as a flight simulator instructor, where he trained many pilots. An entrepreneur at heart, he owned and operated several businesses and worked as a Xerox representative along with being a member of the IBEW.
A passionate sportsman, Ron loved hunting, fishing, and boating on Lake Superior. He enjoyed traveling across the United States, with Florida and Hawaii being his favorite winter destinations. His love for music was evident; he played multiple instruments and was always ready to sing and dance at the sound of a tune. Ron also had a deep appreciation for Off-Broadway plays, musicals, and concerts.
Ron was a dedicated baseball fan, coaching Little League for many years and inspiring young players. Known as "Papa Ron," he was a generous soul, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Rathjen, and brother, Ted Martin, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia Martin, his daughter Vicki Martin Pietro, and two grandsons.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 8th at the Negaunee Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Air Force. A luncheon reception will follow at the Negaunee VFW. In lieu of flowers, please direct any memorial considerations to a charity of your choice in his memory.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans for their devoted care and kindness.
