Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all, Ronald Martinez, Sr., passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025, in Billings, Montana. Born January 20, 1948 in Havre, he spent much of his life in Malta before moving to Billings 20 years ago to be closer to his family-never wanting to miss a moment with them. To his loved ones and so many others, he was simply Papa.
Though he carried the weight of illness for some time, he never complained or let on that he was in pain. Instead, he filled every day with a smile, kind words, and an unwavering love for his family and friends.
Ronnie was a man of many talents and passions. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in shooting his bow and practicing fast draw, a skill he loved teaching his grandchildren. His dedication to the sport led him to become a World Champion in the Cowboy Fast Draw Association's Fastest Gun Alive World Championship-a title he wore with pride and humility.
His love for music ran deep-his rich, Johnny Cash-like voice and skilled guitar playing made for treasured family events. Whether he was volunteering his talents with his granddaughters, Taylen and Tenley, at local nursing homes or picking up his guitar for a song at home, music
was his way of sharing joy. He gave so much of himself to others, always finding a way to lift spirits with a song or a smile.
A man of simple pleasures, Ronnie found happiness in the little things-eating strawberries straight from the patch, savoring a good cup of black coffee after meals, and indulging in watermelon, chocolate-covered cherries, and a plate of ribs. He could often be found cheering on his children and grandchildren at their events, never missing a game, a competition, or a milestone. His unwavering support and pride were known to all-anyone who met him soon heard stories of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.
Ronnie had a quiet but powerful presence, always welcoming others with his warm heart and gentle humor. His kindness and easygoing nature made everyone around him feel comfortable. A lover of Clint Eastwood, Gunsmoke, and his Outlaw cigars, he was also a legendary backseat driver and a master of cheesy jokes, always finding ways to make others laugh. He found great joy in his work at Sam's Club, handing out food samples-not for the job itself, but for the conversations and the chance to brighten someone's day. He never met a stranger, and he never said an unkind word about anyone.
Ronnie is survived by his loving family: Diana Martinez; his son, Ron Martinez, Jr. (Angela); and his daughter, Geneta Faw (Tye). He was a proud grandfather to TyRell, Timothy, Taylor, Taylen, and Tenley Rich (Ian) and their baby boy, Crew; as well as Colby and Courtney, and their mother, Lorie Martinez. Courtney and Kiefer McKay recently welcomed twin boys, Everett and Wyatt, joining their daughter, Wrenley. One of Ronnie's final moments of joy was touching little Everett, who traveled to Papa's bedside from the NICU. He is also survived
by his sister, Sherry Komeotis; his stepbrother, Curtis Valladolid; his special friend, Shirley Haidle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He lived his life with humility and grace, and now, as he takes his final journey, we send him off with the words of 2 Timothy 4:7: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Though he has left this world, Ronnie's legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His family and friends will carry his memory in every song sung, every joke told, and every moment of quiet kindness shared with another. More information about Ronnie's celebration of life this spring will be announced in the coming months. In honor of him, please bring your best jokes, a strong cup of coffee, and a
heart full of love-just as he would have wanted.
