Ronald LeRoy Sunny, 84, of Oakland, passed away on July 8, 2025, at Devlin Manor in Cumberland. Born on May 17, 1941, in Brownsville, PA, he was the son of the late John Paul Sunny (Szanyi) and Julianna Beres Sunny.
Ronald served with distinction in the United States Army from 1959 to 1989, embodying dedication as a Drill Sergeant, S2, member of the Association of Army Engineers, and NATO Sergeant Major Club. Beyond his military career, he was a pillar of his community, deeply involved with St. Peter the Apostle in Oakland and a committed member of Deer Park VFW Post #10077, American Legion Post #71, and the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, where he held esteemed roles as Former District Deputy and Former District Warden. Ronald's leadership extended to the Boy Scouts, where he served as a Scoutmaster for over 20 years, earning the prestigious Woodbadge and Bronze Pelican Award for his exemplary service and impact on youth development.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie Jean (Steiding) Sunny, to whom she was married on October 4, 1963; his children, Ronald Roy Sunny and wife Joeann of Oakland, and Lisa Anne Hall and husband Joseph of Deer Park; his grandchildren, Jeremiah Carlisle and wife Michele of FL, Andrew Carlisle of FL, Tamara Jackson and husband Joshua of Brownsville, PA, Timothy Hall and wife Raven of Oakland, Julianna Bolyard and husband Carlos of Oakland, and Christina Holstine and husband Steven of Labelle, PA; great grandchildren, Kali Carlisle, Mattox Carlisle, Eliot Carlisle, Isis Jackson, Serena Jackson, Veronica Jackson, Isabella Jackson, Liam Mount, Scarlett Hall, Caleb Bolyard, AnnaLeigh Bolyard, Miyah Bolyard, Evee Bolyard, Sophiya Bolyard, Novalyn Bolyard, Carlos Bolyard III, Cailey Holstine, and Gunner Holstine; siblings, Sylvia Lester and husband William, Geraldine Sunny, and James Sunny and wife Jane; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Marie Sunny; and siblings, Carolyn Szanyi, Rose Kelley, John Szanyi, Regis Sunny, Aulga Sheppleman, Irene Draheim, Eleanor Black, Mary Anne Williams, and Robert Sunny.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550, or James Isaac House, 314 S 2nd St, Oakland, MD 21550.
Friends will be received on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM, at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 10 AM in the St. Peter at the Lake Center, McHenry, MD, with Fr. Bill Keown officiating. Interment will follow in the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery at 1 PM where military honors will be accorded.
